VDL Groep reveals fuel cell truck for Toyota’s European logistics

14 september 2023
  • First hydrogen truck by VDL using Toyota fuel cell modules is ready
  • VDL to launch four more trucks to be tested by Toyota’s Logistic Providers
  • Route trials are to start in 2023 and last for 5 years

Eindhoven, Sept. 12, 2023 - Following the previously announced collaboration between VDL Special Vehicles and Toyota last May, the companies are now launching their first demo truck powered by hydrogen. By integrating fuel cell technology from Toyota into VDL's heavy-duty trucks, Toyota aims to decarbonize its logistics operations in Europe, and in doing so, Toyota is joining VDL Special Vehicles in building a cleaner world

The first demo truck will be used to perform road tests and improvements for the next steps of the project. VDL Special Vehicles is preparing the launch four more hydrogen trucks, which will be used by Toyota's logistics service providers VOS Deventer, CEVA, CAT and Yusen. These transport companies will greatly contribute to the project by deploying the hydrogen trucks on their daily logistics routes in Belgium (Antwerp), France (Lille), Germany (Cologne) and the Netherlands (Amsterdam and Rotterdam). The four routes will have at least one hydrogen refuelling station (HRS), including backup solutions.

The cooperation between all parties will increase knowledge about the deployment of hydrogen trucks on public roads contributes to the ecological energy transition in Europe. The 5-year trial is expected to stimulate the improvement and further development of a sustainable hydrogen infrastructure across Europe that meets AFIR requirements. This can further expand the infrastructure of hydrogen refuelling stations in Europe and create more carbon-neutral mobility solutions.

Driven by innovation, VDL Special Vehicles offers smarter and cleaner solutions for on- & off-road vehicles. With this project, VDL Special Vehicles is helping to fulfill its vision: Manufacturing a cleaner environment for everyone. In addition to the electrification of heavy-duty trucks, the company sees great value in working with multiple partners to accelerate the transition to a sustainable and accessible zero-emission hydrogen economy. It is therefore working with companies from all mobility sectors and with different skill sets to test and deliver reliable and efficient solutions.
